Come as you are. Leave feeling better.

Our Charitable Foundation

  • At the BHAC, we feel it’s important to give back and we strive to be more than simply a place to work out. We feel it is important to be involved in and actively support the neighborhoods where we conduct business and where our members live and work. We are energized by the compassion, progressive thinking, and commitment of our membership and believe in the adage “To those to whom much is given, much is expected.” We try to be the vehicle through which more people can get involved.

The Beacon Hill Athletic Club Charitable Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, is the first health club-based public charity in the world. It was established in 1993 by the clubs’ founders, David Ilan Weis and Jason Klein, in order to raise the philanthropic consciousness of the BHAC’s members and to promote grassroots charitable programs both locally and globally.
  • The Foundation got off to a quick and auspicious start when it embarked upon a monumental effort during the Balkan war in Bosnia and Croatia. Struck by the senseless slaughter of civilians and the misery of so many children, we initiated the “Bosnia-to-Boston Airlift” which culminated in the rescue, evacuation, transport and treatment of 13 Balkan civilians to Boston for free medical care.

With the assistance of many club members, the United Nation High Commission for Refugees, the International Organization for Migration, Boston-area hospitals and the Greater Boston community, the BHAC Charitable Foundation secured years’ worth of food, housing, translators, travel and ancillary costs for all these unfortunate refugees. We recall with heavy hearts the one child we were unable to save, Bojan Vilusic, who, despite the valiant efforts of the exemplary doctors and nurses at Shriner’s Burn Center in Boston, succumbed to the injuries he suffered after being electrocuted while trying to escape Croatia by train.
  • As the war trailed off, we began sending much-needed aid to the region. We secured a donated ambulance and sent it to Sarajevo, we supplied team of paramedics and relief workers through our Bosnian Childrens Fund, and sponsored a summer basketball camp in Sarajevo and an orphanage in Mostar.

On a more local level, the BHAC Charitable Foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for organizations such as Easter Seals, Children’s Hospital, the Lenny Fund, the AJWS Tsunami Fund, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Ronald McDonald Charities, the 911 Victims Fund, the Wounded Warrior project, the Home for Little Wanderers, The OneFund, the Lymphoma Society, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and many other charities. Our annual Fitness Challenge, now in its 18th year, raises tens of thousands of dollars for these and other deserving causes.
